Face Up with Canvas LMS: LTI 1.3 or SCORM
In Canvas, Face Up is registered once via LTI 1.3 under Developer Keys. Teachers then add a simulation as an assignment, and the score comes back into the gradebook.
In short
Yes, Face Up works with Canvas LMS, and the recommended method is LTI 1.3. Your administrator creates an LTI Key under Developer Keys and installs Face Up by its Client ID; teachers then pick the scenario when they create an assignment (Deep Linking), and Face Up sends the score back to that assignment’s column. SCORM remains an option if Instructure’s SCORM tool is enabled on your account.
How it works
What the administrator does, once
They create an LTI Key under Admin > [your account] > Developer Keys with the configuration supplied by Face Up, enable the LTI Advantage services, then install the tool under Settings > Apps using the Client ID. They also set the Privacy level, which decides what identity data Canvas sends to Face Up.
What the teacher or trainer does
In Assignments, they create an assignment with the External Tool submission type and select Face Up. The Assignment Selection placement then opens the scenario catalogue inside Canvas: they pick one, confirm, and the assignment is linked to the right scenario, with no URL to copy.
What the learner sees
They open the assignment and Face Up launches from Canvas with no new login, embedded in the page or in a new window. The browser asks for microphone access the first time. When the conversation ends, they read their debrief and can replay the situation.
Setup, step by step
With LTI 1.3 (recommended)
- Create the LTI Key. Under Admin > [your account] > Developer Keys, choose Add Developer Key, then Add LTI Key, and enter the configuration supplied by Face Up (Manual Entry, Paste JSON or Enter URL).
- Enable the services and placement. Turn on the LTI Advantage grade services (Line Items, Score) and the Assignment Selection placement for Deep Linking. The roster service (NRPS) is not needed: Face Up does not use it.
- Set the Privacy level. It defaults to anonymous, so Canvas sends neither name nor email. Choose name_only, email_only or public according to your internal policy if you want named tracking in Face Up.
- Save and copy the Client ID. Save the key, check that it is enabled, then copy its Client ID.
- Install the app by Client ID. Under Admin > [your account] > Settings, Apps tab, open View App Configurations > Add App, choose the By Client ID Configuration Type, paste the Client ID, then Submit and Install. Then send the Face Up team the identifiers they ask for.
- Create the assignment in a pilot course. In Assignments, create an External Tool assignment, select Face Up and pick the scenario in the selection window. The score out of 100 is rescaled to the assignment’s maximum points.
- Test with a student account. Launch the assignment with a test account: opening with no new login, microphone, debrief, then the score in the assignment’s column.
With SCORM
- Have the SCORM tool enabled. An administrator must enable Instructure’s SCORM LTI tool under External Apps at account level, sometimes with help from your Customer Success Manager. It is not available on beta and test instances.
- Get the Face Up module. Face Up supplies one .zip per simulation, in SCORM 1.2 or 2004; Canvas accepts SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 (2nd, 3rd and 4th Editions).
- Import the zip. In the course, open SCORM in Course Navigation, click Upload and choose the file.
- Choose the import type. Under Choose Import Type, select graded assignment so the score reaches the gradebook (100 points by default), then click Go. This choice is permanent.
What comes back into your LMS
With LTI 1.3, Face Up returns results through AGS (Assignment and Grade Services), which Canvas documents with its Line Items and Score services. With SCORM, a graded assignment also receives the score in the gradebook.
- Score: a score out of 100, rescaled to the assignment’s maximum points, written to its gradebook column.
- One column per activity: each Face Up assignment maps to one scenario and one grade line.
- Completion: Face Up sends it too, but the Canvas documentation does not say how it is displayed; the score is the figure to follow.
- The debrief: objectives met or not, strengths and points to improve stay in Face Up, where the learner reads them after each session.
Good to know
- Only an administrator with Developer Keys permission can create the LTI Key. The new Canvas Apps page (Discover, Manage) is limited to root account admins; Developer Keys remain available.
- Disabling or deleting the LTI Key removes the app installs: avoid it once assignments exist.
- Microphone access depends on the Canvas iframe and on the permission granted in the browser, which is requested the first time. Test on a typical machine; opening in a new window is the fallback.
- Start with one pilot course, one scenario and one group. Check the launch, the gradebook column and the microphone, then scale up.

Frequently asked questions
Is Face Up compatible with Canvas LMS?
Yes. Face Up connects to Canvas via LTI 1.3, with Deep Linking to pick the scenario and the grade services to return the score. It can also be imported as SCORM 1.2 or 2004 if the SCORM tool is enabled on your account.
LTI or SCORM with Canvas?
LTI 1.3. Canvas documents both LTI services Face Up uses: Deep Linking, through the Assignment Selection placement, and the Line Items and Score grade services. SCORM relies on an Instructure tool that must be enabled separately and is mainly useful to start fast on a few courses. Deep Linking is explained in our dedicated article.
Does the score come back into Canvas?
Yes. With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends a score out of 100, rescaled to the assignment’s maximum points, to that assignment’s column. The detailed debrief stays in Face Up: see what AGS sends back.
How long does setup take, and who does it?
Allow 48 hours after the scoping call: the Face Up team configures the LTI tool with your Canvas administrator, who needs access to Developer Keys. Teachers then add their own assignments. Book your scoping call.
Is it included in my Face Up plan?
Yes. SCORM and LTI are included in every Face Up plan. SSO, CRM and HRIS connections and the API are part of the Enterprise plan. Data is hosted in Paris (GDPR).
