Face Up with D2L Brightspace: LTI 1.3 or SCORM
Brightspace supports LTI Advantage, with Deep Linking and grade return. Face Up connects through LTI 1.3: trainers pick the scenario in Content and the score lands in Grades. SCORM is also available to get started.
In short
Yes, Face Up works with D2L Brightspace. The recommended method is LTI 1.3 (LTI Advantage): your administrator registers Face Up once in Manage Extensibility, trainers then add a scenario from Content through Deep Linking, and Face Up sends completion and the score out of 100 back to Brightspace, where the score appears in Grades. Brightspace also accepts Face Up's SCORM 1.2 and 2004 modules if you want to start on a few courses.
How it works
What the administrator does once
Brightspace splits LTI 1.3 into three levels: the tool registration, its deployment to the Org Units you choose (organisation, department or course), and the links trainers use. This requires the Manage LTI Tools permission at organisation level. The three screens are also grouped together in Brightspace Apps.
What the trainer does
In a Content module, the trainer goes to Existing Activities, chooses Face Up and selects the scenario from the catalogue that opens, with no URL to copy. This is Deep Linking, enabled by default in Brightspace. Each scenario added becomes an activity with its own grade item in Grades.
What the learner sees
Learners open the activity from their course without a new login. Face Up displays in the page, in an iframe: they talk to a counterpart who reacts to what they say, and the browser asks for microphone access the first time. At the end, they read their debrief and can replay the situation.
Setup, step by step
With LTI 1.3
- Register Face Up In Admin Tools > Manage Extensibility, LTI Advantage tab, click Register Tool and choose Standard. Enter Name, Domain, Redirect URLs, OpenID Connect Login URL, Target Link URL and Keyset URL exactly as provided by Face Up (Redirect URLs accept no wildcards), then tick the Assignment and Grade Services extension; Deep Linking is already on, and Names and Role Provisioning Services can stay unticked because Face Up does not use it.
- Deploy the tool In Admin Tools > External Learning Tools, LTI Advantage tab, click New Deployment for Face Up. Tick Assignment and Grade Services, set the security settings, choose courses or departments with Add Org Units, then confirm with Create Deployment.
- Exchange the identifiers Enter in Face Up the platform identifiers from the registration and the Deployment Id of the deployment. The Face Up team does this step with you.
- Create the Deep Linking link On the deployment, open View Links > New Link and choose the Deep Linking Quicklink type. This is what makes Face Up appear under Content > Existing Activities.
- Add a scenario to a course In Content, open the module, then Existing Activities > Face Up. Pick the scenario from the catalogue: the activity is created in the module.
- Test with a learner account Launch the activity with a real test account enrolled in the course: the simulation opens without a new login, the microphone works, the debrief appears and the score reaches Grades.
With SCORM
- Download the module In Face Up, download the simulation's SCORM module (.zip), in version 1.2 or 2004.
- Import it into Content In a Content module, choose Upload/Create > New SCORM Object/xAPI Object, then Add Course Package - SCORM > Upload (up to 50 packages at once). An object already imported is added through Add Existing > SCORM/xAPI Object.
- Set the grade and display Create the optional grade item and choose its grade calculation method. Choose an embedded player or a new window, and dynamic versioning if courses should always use the latest version of the package.
- Test With a learner account, check the launch, the microphone, and that completion and score are recorded.
What comes back into your LMS
With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends results back to Brightspace through Assignment and Grade Services (see how grade passback works). With SCORM, Brightspace records the module's completion and score and can link them to a grade item.
- A score out of 100, rescaled to the grade item's maximum: an activity graded out of 20 receives a mark out of 20, in Grades.
- Completion of the activity, sent with the score.
- One grade item per activity: each scenario added to the course has its own line.
- The debrief (objectives met or not, strengths, points to improve) stays in Face Up, where the learner reads it after each session.
Good to know
- Learner role: Brightspace only stores the score if the learner's role has ‘Can be graded in Grades’ enabled. Check it before the pilot.
- One domain, one registration: a domain can be used by only one enabled registration. If an earlier Face Up test registration exists, disable it before creating a new one.
- Iframe and microphone: Deep Linking links always open in an iframe in Brightspace. Test the microphone on your learners' browsers, Safari included, as third-party cookie blocking can affect iframe launches.
- SCORM: importing into Content requires the new SCORM solution (Content Service enabled). On an older setup, the Learning Repository follows a different workflow and cannot publish SCORM 2004 directly from a computer, so use the SCORM 1.2 module there.
- Start small: one pilot course, one scenario, one group. Check the launch, the grade item in Grades and the microphone, then extend to other Org Units.

Frequently asked questions
Is Face Up compatible with D2L Brightspace?
Yes. D2L documents LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3) in Brightspace, including Deep Linking and Assignment and Grade Services, and Brightspace accepts SCORM 1.2 and 2004 packages. Face Up works with both methods.
Should I use LTI 1.3 or SCORM with Brightspace?
LTI 1.3 is recommended: trainers pick the scenario from Content, scenarios stay up to date without re-importing anything, and the score returns to Grades. SCORM suits a fast start on a few courses, with one .zip module to import per simulation. Our SCORM, LTI and xAPI comparison explains the differences.
Does the score come back into Grades?
Yes. With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends a score out of 100, rescaled to the grade item's maximum, and the completion of each activity. With SCORM, Brightspace records the module's completion and score. The detailed debrief stays available in Face Up.
Who does the setup, and how long does it take?
Allow 48 hours after the scoping call. The Face Up team configures the LTI tool with your Brightspace administrator, who needs the Manage LTI Tools permission, or delivers ready-to-import SCORM modules. Trainers then add their scenarios on their own.
Is the integration included in my plan?
Yes: SCORM and LTI are included in all Face Up plans. SSO and CRM, HRIS and API connections are part of the Enterprise plan. Data is hosted in Paris, in line with GDPR.
