Face Up with Rise Up: LTI 1.3 or SCORM

Register Face Up in the LTI Advantage section of Rise Up, then add simulations to your trainings. Learners practise without leaving the platform and without a new login.

SCORM and LTI 1.3 included in every plan · Connected within 48 hours of scoping · Servers in Paris

In short

Yes. Face Up connects to Rise Up via LTI 1.3: an administrator registers it in Settings › LTI Advantage, then your designers add it to a training from Third-party steps, picking the scenario through Deep Linking. A SCORM 1.2 or 2004 package, added as a SCORM step, remains a simple way to start.

How it works

The administrator registers Face Up in LTI Advantage

In Settings, the LTI Advantage section is where Rise Up hosts an external tool: the Face Up case. The administrator enters the details Face Up provides, and Rise Up displays its platform identifiers in return (Client ID, Deployment ID, authorisation and token endpoints), which the Face Up team enters on its side. The step-by-step guide is in our Rise Up tutorial.

Designers add a Face Up step to a training

Once registered, the tool appears for designers under Third-party steps in a training. With Deep Linking enabled, the designer picks the scenario from the Face Up catalogue while adding the step: no URL to copy, no file to import.

Learners practise inside their learning path

They open the step and Face Up launches in the page (iframe) or in a new tab, depending on the Default Launch Container chosen, with no new login. The browser asks for microphone access the first time. After the conversation, they read their debrief and can replay the situation.

Setup, step by step

With LTI 1.3 (recommended)

  1. Open the right section. In Settings, go to LTI Advantage, not LTI connection, which publishes Rise Up courses into another LMS.
  2. Create the external tool. Fill in Tool Name (for example “Face Up”), Tool URL, Public Keyset URL and the other addresses Face Up provides.
  3. Enable Deep Linking and choose the display. Turn on Support Deep Linking, enter Face Up's Content Selection URL, then choose the Default Launch Container: iframe or new tab.
  4. Send the identifiers to Face Up. Rise Up then shows Client ID, Deployment ID, Authorization Endpoint, Token Endpoint and OIDC Auth Request URL: send them to the Face Up team, who complete the pairing.
  5. Add Face Up to a training. In the training, add a step from Third-party steps, select Face Up and pick the scenario from the catalogue.
  6. Test with a real learner account. Check that the simulation opens without a new login, that the microphone works and that the debrief appears. Then look at what Rise Up reporting shows for score and completion.

With SCORM 1.2 or 2004

  1. Download the package. Export the simulation's SCORM package (.zip) from Face Up, in 1.2 or 2004: Rise Up reads both (2004 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions).
  2. Add a SCORM step. In the training, choose the External Steps step type, then the SCORM step. You need to be an admin, or a designer or author with edit rights on the training.
  3. Upload the .zip as it is. Do not unzip it or rename it with accented characters: Rise Up expects an imsmanifest.xml at the root and a file of 1 GB at most.
  4. Test a full session. Play the simulation to the end with a learner account, then check progress, status and score in Rise Up reporting.

What comes back into your LMS

What Rise Up records depends on the method; either way, the learning detail stays in Face Up.

  • With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends a score out of 100 and completion for each session through the AGS service. Rise Up's documentation does not yet describe how these show for Third-party steps: check them in reporting during the pilot.
  • With SCORM, Rise Up tracks progress (0%, 50% once the simulation is started, 100% once completed), completion, pass or fail, and the score, shown as a percentage.
  • The debrief stays in Face Up: only one overall grade is sent; the detail (objectives met or not, strengths, points to improve) is read after each session.

Good to know

  • Two LTI menus not to mix up: LTI Advantage hosts an external tool such as Face Up; LTI connection does the opposite and publishes your Rise Up courses into another LMS.
  • Rise Up is not Articulate Rise 360: this page is about the Rise Up LMS. Rise 360, Articulate's authoring tool, is integrated differently, by embedding in a module.
  • Microphone in an iframe: Rise Up's documentation does not cover microphone permission for third-party steps. Test the microphone in iframe mode during the pilot; if it is blocked, set the Default Launch Container to new tab.
  • SCORM: progress has only three levels (0, 50 and 100%), and a final status sent too early freezes the score. Test a full session before opening, and keep the same structure when you replace a package, so learner progress is kept.
  • Start with a pilot: one training, one scenario, one group. Check the launch, the microphone and what reaches reporting, then scale up. At Eurotunnel (LeShuttle), around 1,000 learners now practise customer relations from Rise Up: see the Eurotunnel case.

Frequently asked questions

Is Face Up compatible with Rise Up?

Yes. Rise Up hosts LTI 1.3 external tools in its LTI Advantage section, with Deep Linking, and Face Up is registered there like any tool of this kind. SCORM 1.2 and 2004 packages also work. At Eurotunnel (LeShuttle), around 1,000 learners practise with Face Up from Rise Up.

LTI 1.3 or SCORM: which should I use with Rise Up?

LTI 1.3 preferably: designers pick the scenario through Deep Linking, content stays hosted by Face Up and updates without re-import, and learners stay in Rise Up. SCORM suits a quick start on a few trainings, with documented tracking but progress limited to 0, 50 or 100%.

Does the score come back into Rise Up?

With SCORM, yes: Rise Up records completion, pass or fail and the score as a percentage. With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends the score out of 100 and completion through AGS; as Rise Up's documentation does not detail how they show for third-party steps, the pilot checks this with a real learner account. The detailed debrief stays in Face Up.

How long does setup take, and who does it?

Allow 48 hours after the scoping call. The Face Up team configures the LTI tool with your Rise Up administrator, or delivers SCORM packages ready to import. Your designers then add Face Up steps to their trainings themselves.

Is the Rise Up integration included in my plan?

Yes. SCORM and LTI are included in every Face Up plan. SSO, CRM and HRIS connections and the API are part of the Enterprise plan. Data is hosted in Paris (GDPR).
