Face Up with Moodle: LTI 1.3 or SCORM 1.2
Register Face Up once as an LTI 1.3 external tool, then add simulations to your Moodle courses. Learners practise without leaving the course, and their grade lands in the gradebook.
In short
Yes. Face Up connects to Moodle as an LTI 1.3 external tool: a site administrator registers it once in Manage tools, trainers pick the scenario with the Select content button, and the score out of 100 and completion return to the course gradebook. To start quickly on a few courses, a SCORM 1.2 package also works: it is the only SCORM version core Moodle supports.
How it works
The administrator registers Face Up once
Registration happens at site level, in Manage tools, and needs a Moodle site administrator. Moodle supports all three LTI Advantage services; Face Up uses two of them: Deep Linking to pick the scenario and AGS to send the grade back. On a hosted or partner-run Moodle, this step goes through your host or integrator. The full walkthrough is in our Moodle tutorial.
Trainers add a simulation like any other activity
In the course, the trainer clicks Add an activity or resource, chooses Face Up in the Activity chooser, and the Select content button opens the Face Up scenario catalogue. Pick, confirm: no URL to copy. A clear activity name such as “Role play: unhappy customer” helps learners find their way.
Learners practise without leaving Moodle
They click the activity and Face Up opens inside the page (Embed mode) or in a new window, depending on the setting, with no new login. The browser asks for microphone access the first time. They hold the conversation, read their debrief at the end and can try again as often as they like.
Setup, step by step
With LTI 1.3 (recommended)
- Register the external tool. In Site administration › Plugins › Activity modules › External tool › Manage tools, configure the tool manually as LTI 1.3 with the values Face Up provides: tool URL, login initiation URL, redirection URI and public keyset URL.
- Choose the services. Under Choose which of the services you want to use with the tool, enable Deep Linking and the grade service (AGS). NRPS can stay off: Face Up does not use it.
- Set privacy and display. Allow Accept grades from the tool and, in line with your internal policy, Share launcher's name with the tool and Share launcher's email with the tool. Set Default launch container to Embed and offer the tool in the Activity chooser through Tool configuration usage.
- Send the identifiers to Face Up. Once the tool is saved, pass the values Moodle generated for it (client_id, keys, URLs) to the Face Up team, who complete the pairing.
- Add the activity to a course. Click Add an activity or resource, choose Face Up in the Activity chooser, then use Select content to take the scenario from the Face Up catalogue.
- Check the grade and test. In the activity's Grade section, keep a maximum grade that fits Face Up's score out of 100. Then launch the activity with a real learner account and check the column in the Gradebook.
With SCORM 1.2
- Export as SCORM 1.2. Download the simulation's SCORM package (.zip) from Face Up in version 1.2: core Moodle does not support SCORM 2004.
- Create the SCORM activity. In the course, go to Add an activity or resource › SCORM Package and upload the .zip in the Package section.
- Open in a new window. Set Display package to New window, unless your test shows the microphone works in the page: Moodle's SCORM player frame does not grant microphone access itself.
- Set grading and completion. Choose the Grading method (Learning Objects, Highest grade, Average grade or Sum grade) and set Activity completion.
- Test with a learner account. Play a full session, then check the attempt, status and score in the activity's Reports tab.
What comes back into your LMS
With LTI 1.3, Face Up automatically sends the result of each session back to the course gradebook, through the AGS service.
- A score out of 100, rescaled to the activity's maximum grade: an activity graded out of 20 receives a grade out of 20.
- Completion of the activity, with a single grade line per Face Up activity. A teacher can switch grading off with Allow tool to add grades in the gradebook.
- With SCORM 1.2, Moodle records attempts, status and score; the score becomes the activity grade according to the Grading method, and completion follows Activity completion.
- The debrief stays in Face Up: objectives met or not, strengths and points to improve, which the learner reads after each session.
Good to know
- Microphone in Embed mode: Moodle grants the microphone only to the domain of the registered Tool URL. Keep the URL Face Up gives you exactly as it is; if the microphone stays blocked, switch the activity to New window.
- Admin rights: only a site administrator can register the tool. On a hosted or integrator-run Moodle, bring the host or integrator in at the scoping stage.
- SCORM 2004: core Moodle stops at SCORM 1.2; version 2004 needs a commercial plugin (Rustici SCORM Cloud). Export in 1.2.
- Labels: menu names change between versions (3.x, 4.x, 5.x) and language packs. The labels quoted here follow MoodleDocs 5.0.
- Start small: one pilot course, one scenario, one group. Check the launch, the gradebook column and the microphone, then scale up. H3 Campus and the CCI network followed this path, as told in our Moodle case study.

Frequently asked questions
Is Face Up compatible with Moodle?
Yes. Face Up connects to Moodle as an LTI 1.3 external tool, with scenario selection through Deep Linking and grade return through AGS, two services Moodle supports. A SCORM 1.2 package also works. H3 Campus and CCIs already use Face Up in their Moodle.
LTI 1.3 or SCORM: which should I use with Moodle?
LTI 1.3 in most cases: trainers pick the scenario from their course, the grade lands in the gradebook, and a scenario updated in Face Up is updated in every course at once, with no re-import. SCORM 1.2 suits a quick start on a few courses; core Moodle does not support SCORM 2004 without a plugin.
Does the score come back into the Moodle gradebook?
Yes. With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends a score out of 100, rescaled to the activity's maximum grade, plus completion: one line per activity. With SCORM 1.2, Moodle records the score of each attempt and turns it into the activity grade. The detailed debrief remains available in Face Up.
How long does setup take, and who does it?
Allow 48 hours after the scoping call. The Face Up team configures the LTI tool with your Moodle administrator, or delivers SCORM packages ready to import. After that, your trainers add simulations to their courses themselves.
Is the Moodle integration included in my plan?
Yes. SCORM and LTI are included in every Face Up plan. SSO, CRM and HRIS connections and the API are part of the Enterprise plan. Data is hosted in Paris (GDPR).
