LTI 1.3 · SCORM 1.2

Face Up with Totara Learn: LTI 1.3 or SCORM 1.2

On Totara 13 or later, Face Up is added as an External tool through LTI 1.3, with scenario selection and grade return. On an older site, or to start quickly, Face Up's SCORM 1.2 module is imported as a SCORM activity.

In short

Yes, Face Up works with Totara Learn, in two ways. On Totara 13 and later, the administrator sets up Face Up as an External tool using LTI 1.3; trainers then pick the scenario with Select content, and the grade returns to the course gradebook. On an older site, or to start on a few courses, Face Up's SCORM 1.2 module, which Totara Learn fully supports, sends completion and score to Totara.

How it works

What the administrator does once

The administrator sets up Face Up as an LTI 1.3 tool at site level, in Manage tools, and uses Tool configuration usage to show it in the course activity chooser. Totara then displays its own LTI 1.3 values, to be sent to Face Up. The principle of this exchange is explained in our guide to integrating Face Up with an LMS.

What the trainer does

In their course, the trainer adds an External tool activity, clicks Select content and chooses the scenario from the Face Up catalogue, with no URL to copy. They can add the matching grade line to the gradebook at the same time, then set the display (Launch container) and grade return (Accept grades from the tool).

What the learner sees

Learners click the activity and Face Up opens without a new login, embedded in the page (Embed or Embed without blocks) or in a new window (New Window). They talk to a counterpart who reacts to what they say; the browser asks for microphone access the first time. At the end, they read their debrief in Face Up.

On a site older than Totara 13

LTI 1.3 and LTI Advantage arrived with Totara 13; an older version such as Totara 11 only offers LTI 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. In that case, use Face Up's SCORM 1.2 modules: Totara Learn fully supports SCORM 1.2.

Setup, step by step

With LTI 1.3

  1. Set up the tool From the Quick-access menu, open Plugins > Activity modules > External tool > Manage tools, then choose Configure a tool manually. Enter the values provided by Face Up (tool URL, login initiation URL and public keyset URL) and, in Tool configuration usage, choose to show the tool in the activity chooser.
  2. Send Totara's values to Face Up Under Tools, click the eye icon next to Face Up: Totara shows the Platform ID, Client ID, Deployment ID, Public Keyset URL, Access Token URL and Authentication request URL. Copy these six values into Face Up, one by one.
  3. Add the activity In the course, click Turn editing on, then Add an activity or resource > External tool > Add.
  4. Choose the scenario Click Select content, pick the Face Up scenario from the catalogue and add the grade line offered to the gradebook.
  5. Configure the activity Choose the Launch container (Embed, Embed without blocks or New Window), decide whether to tick Share launcher's name with the tool and Share launcher's email with the tool, and tick Accept grades from the tool.
  6. Test in a sandbox course With a real learner account, check that the simulation opens without a new login, the microphone works, the debrief appears and the grade reaches the gradebook.

With SCORM

  1. Download the module In Face Up, download the simulation's SCORM 1.2 module (.zip).
  2. Add the activity In the course, click Turn editing on, then Add an activity > SCORM, and upload the .zip. You can also drag the .zip into a course section and choose Add a SCORM package > Upload.
  3. Set up tracking Complete the SCORM settings, then define the rules under Activity completion.
  4. Test Launch the activity with a learner account and check the microphone, completion and score.

What comes back into your LMS

With LTI 1.3, Face Up sends results back through Assignment and Grade Services, provided Accept grades from the tool is ticked in the activity (see how grade passback works). With SCORM, Totara records the module's completion and score.

  • A score out of 100, rescaled to the grade line's maximum, in the course gradebook.
  • Completion, sent with the score. Define under Activity completion what counts as complete in the learning path, and check it during the pilot.
  • One grade line per activity: each scenario added to the course has its own.
  • The debrief (objectives met or not, strengths, points to improve) stays in Face Up.

Good to know

  • Completion and version: if completion relies on viewing the activity, use a version that includes the April 2023 fix (from Totara 16.12 and 17.6), which makes viewing an LTI 1.3 tool count towards completion.
  • Microphone: Totara does not document microphone access in an embedded activity (Embed). Test it; if needed, the New Window launch container is the safe option.
  • SCORM 1.2 rather than 2004: Totara only partly supports SCORM 2004 (no sequencing and navigation), hence the SCORM 1.2 module. Since Totara 13, capabilities control who can upload a SCORM package, so check your trainers' capabilities.
  • No need for Publish as LTI tool: this feature and the LTI (Experimental) authentication plugin are for offering Totara itself as a tool. To use Face Up, the External tool activity is enough.
  • Start with a pilot: one course, one scenario, one group. Totara's documentation gives little detail on LTI 1.3 tool fields, so this sandbox test checks the launch, the grade line and the microphone before you extend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Face Up compatible with Totara Learn?

Yes. Totara states that it supports LTI 1.3 and the LTI Advantage extensions (Deep Linking, Assignment and Grade Services) as a tool consumer since Totara 13, and Totara Learn fully supports SCORM 1.2. Face Up works with both methods.

LTI 1.3 or SCORM with Totara?

On Totara 13 or later, choose LTI 1.3: the trainer selects the scenario with Select content, scenarios stay up to date without re-importing, and the grade returns to the gradebook. On an older version, or to start on a few courses, use the SCORM 1.2 module. Our SCORM, LTI and xAPI comparison explains the differences.

Does the score come back into Totara?

Yes. With LTI 1.3 and Accept grades from the tool ticked, Face Up sends a score out of 100, rescaled to the grade line's maximum, and completion. With SCORM, Totara records the module's completion and score. The detailed debrief stays in Face Up.

Who does the setup, and how long does it take?

Allow 48 hours after the scoping call. The Face Up team configures the LTI tool with your Totara site administrator, or delivers ready-to-import SCORM modules. Then plan a test in a sandbox course before opening it to trainers.

Is it included in my Face Up plan?

Yes: SCORM and LTI are included in all Face Up plans. SSO and CRM, HRIS and API connections are part of the Enterprise plan. Data is hosted in Paris, in line with GDPR.
