Experiential learning

Definition

Experiential learning means learning from an experience that is lived and then analysed. The best-known model, David Kolb’s cycle (1984), runs through four stages: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation and active experimentation.

The four stages

You go through a situation, step back on what happened, draw a rule or method from it, then test it in a new situation. And the cycle starts again.

Why simulations fit

A simulation provides the experience, the debrief feeds reflection, and the ability to replay lets learners immediately test what they have understood.

With Face Up

Every Face Up session follows this cycle: the conversation, the debrief on your rubric, then a new attempt to apply the action plan.
