Forgetting curve
Definition
The forgetting curve describes how quickly we forget what we have learned when it is not reactivated. Identified by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, it shows that forgetting is fast in the first few days.
Also called
Ebbinghaus curve, memory decay
What it means for training
A training day followed by nothing fades fast. What lasts is what gets reactivated: recalled, practised, applied in a concrete situation.
How to counter it
Space out reminders over time, practise rather than re-read, and put learners in the situation shortly before they need it on the job.
With Face Up
Face Up simulations can be replayed independently after training, and AI coaching checks understanding between sessions.
