Non-verbal communication
Definition
Non-verbal communication covers everything conveyed without words: posture, gestures, gaze and facial expressions. It weighs heavily in how a message is received, especially face to face.
Also called
body language, non-verbal signals
What is observed
Sitting upright or slumped, looking at the counterpart or at one’s notes, using open or closed gestures, keeping the pace of the exchange in sync with the other person.
How to train it
Non-verbal skills are built by seeing yourself in action: facing an avatar, with a recording to review and feedback on the moments when posture or gaze changed.
With Face Up
Face Up records observable signals (posture, gaze, voice, gestures, pace of the exchange) and includes them in the debrief. Face Up does not detect or infer learners’ emotions.
